About RTYC

THE OLD DAYS - CAN YOU HELP?

E-mail Print PDF

Following is a selection of photographs taken from what we think was a Club prizegiving in 1965 or thereabouts. These were forwarded by former member Ed Thomson who came across them when clearing out some items originally owned by his parents, Jim & Ruth Thomson also former RTYC Members. As very active members at that time Jim & Ruth Thomson, helped by Alex Pitcaithly, had obviously been asked to hand out the prizes.

A number of existing Members can be identified in the photo's, albeit in a much younger form, so let's see if you can identify anyone before reading the captions below each photo.  We have not been able to identify all persons so if you can fill any of the blanks let us know......

PHOTO 1 - standing left to right David Nicol, Alex Pitcaithly & Ruth Thomson with Stewart (Chiefie) Duncan sitting in the background?  In case some might not recognise David he now has a beard which along with his thinning hair is now white (I am kind and have not used the word grey) and is often now seen helping in the race box. In fact the best up to date description of David is think Captain Birds Eye.  Can anyone name the half lady sitting next to Chiefie?

PHOTO 2 - Ian Valentine (sailed a boat called Stroma), Alex Pitcaithly & Ruth Thomson. In the background (with pint in hand) is Hugh Scott.

PHOTO 3 - Alex Pitcaithly, Ruth & Jim Thomson who has just been presented with the fishing net in his hand. Jim Thomson did a lot of Safety Boat duty and the net was to fish sailors out the water.  Former Commodore Lanyon Scott looks on in the background.  NOTE Member Ian Hunter asked if the Burgee featured in many of these photo's could be identified? Member David Nicol confirms the SFMS Burgee stands for 'Shipwrecked Fishermans Mariners Society'.  For many years this pennant was raced for at RTYC with the Race Entry money donated to this Society.

PHOTO 4 - Ruth Thomson presenting a trophy to an unknown member. Can anyone identify him? (Now identified by David Nicol as a John Midwood who sailed an Enterprise 'Marina Kay')

PHOTO 5 - Another unknown Member getting a prize from Alex Pitcaithly and Ruth Thomson.  Can anyone give a name? Again Lanyon Scott and former Commodore Tom Andrews look on. (Again identified by David Nicol as John Jones who sailed an Enterprise 'Escapade')

PHOTO 6 - Left to Right Hugh Scott (see he can smile!) Alistair Stewart (who now owns/sails the Squib Wavelength) & Stewart Duncan.

PHOTO 7 - Hugh & Ken Scott.

PHOTO 8 - Doug Philp gets a trophy from Alex & Ruth.

MANY THANKS TO ED THOMSON FOR MAKING THESE PHOTO'S AVAILABLE.

2012 WINTER SERIES GOES MINATURE!

E-mail Print PDF

RTYC's 2012 Dinghy Winter Series goes from strength to strength with over 30 dinghies participating each Sunday requiring the fleet to be split into two classes. However a third class appeared on the scene last Sunday causing a lot of spectator interest.  This is because the new participanting boats were only 1 metre long, and the crew stayed warm and dry on the shore!

This was because although a number of RTYC Members have sailed radio controlled yachts for a number of years this has always been done on inland ponds well away from the RTYC but the group are looking at regularly sailing their model yachts in the river off RTYC.  So why not come along and see what it's all about........

RTYC YACHT WINS ROUND ISLE OF WIGHT RACE!

RTYC Keelboat wins prestigious Queens Diamond Jubilee

Regatta/East Cowes Sailing Club Centenary Year

Celebrations, 'Sail the Wight' race!

RTYC stalwart and Club Secretary Stuart Buchanans son, Andrew, also a former RTYC Cadet and Member, moved to the Isle of Wight a number of years ago and recently acquired a Humphreys 23 keelboat.  This gave Dad Stuart a great excuse for regular visits to the IOW to "ensure son Andrew benefited from his greater sailing experience!" (If you are reading this Andrew don't worry we know the truth!)  Dad Stuart therefore jumped at this opportunity and flew down especially for this 'once in a lifetime' race.

The course was in a clockwise direction round the Isle of Wight. It was a beat all the way to the Bembridge Buoy and then a reach, spinnaker broad reach & run to the Needles and then a hard beat back in a freshening easterly wind to the finish line at the Royal Yacht Squadron at Cowes.  The crew was Andrew Buchanan helm and skipper (well Dad let him think so), Dad Stuart, Roger Bee and Simon Judge (who had just flown in on leave from Sril Lanka)
Knowing Stuart, members will not be surprised to hear there were a few pints sunk in the pub that night when it was learnt that the appropriately named 'Haggis' from 'The Royal Tay Yacht Club' was the winner!  That must rank as RTYC's most prestigious win in 2012.

When one considers the fleet comprised mainly much larger, more expensive and no doubt some professionally crewed boats this was an excellent result and I am sure all RTYC Members join me in asking Stuart to convey our congratulations to all involved for a job very well done!

'Haggis' in action.

BLAST FROM THE PAST (1973).........

E-mail Print PDF

............as members will be aware we have been requesting our long standing members to let us have old sailing photographs as archive photographs are proving very popular in the Photo Album section of this Web Site.

Well one member did not hand in any photographs but handed in a copy of a local Dundee paper dated 31st March 1973.  The reason was that it featured a half page article, with photo, pertaining to four young (well they were in 1973!) current RTYC members about to embark on a major boat building exercise.

Here is the photo, can you name them?......

To learn more and read the article look at the Photo Gallery (BLAST FROM THE PAST) section of this Web Site.......
