The
Sailing Club For All The Family
A Club With A History
The Royal Tay Yacht Club, the sailing
club for all the family, welcomes you.
The Royal Tay Yacht Club, or RTYC as it
is referred to locally, has had its station on the Northern shore of the River Tay
at West Ferry Bay, Dundee, Scotland for over one hundred years.
The Club itself was founded in 1885
under the name of The Tay Corinthian Sailing Club before becoming The Tay
Corinthian Yacht Club in 1887. Four years later, in 1891, the Club again
changed its name to The Royal Tay Yacht Club following approval from HM Queen
Victoria.
The Club Today
Today the RTYC operates from its main
clubhouse on Dundee Road, West Ferry and also has properties on the beach area
at West Ferry Bay where all the main sailing activities are conducted.
The
Club also owns covered boat storage close to the harbour at Broughty Ferry,
located about 0.5 mile from the main club.
For those with an interest in sailing,
the RTYC provides an excellent base for the sport. A variety of sailing events
are held throughout the year, ranging from evening sailing and weekend regattas
for club members to hosting larger open regattas and championships, as and when
required. In 2002 the RTYC played host to the National Sonata Class Championships
which attracted boats from all over the UK. 2006 saw the return
to the Tay of East
Coast Sailing Week, the premier sailing event for the North of
England and East Coast of Scotland. Pictures of the event are
available by
clicking this link. This major
event returns to the RTYC in 2009. On an annual basis the RTYC hosts Tay Week
on behalf of all the sailing clubs in the area belonging to the Tay Yacht Clubs Association.
Tay Week 2007 was the 57th running of the Tay Week event.
Its is not only sailing that is promoted
at the RTYC. The Club encourages all forms of water-sport: windsurfing,
power boating, jetski and sailing from small single-handed dinghies to larger high
performance yachts. For those who like competition, the Club’s extensive
racing programme is designed to meet the needs of all. For those who prefer to
spend their time “messing about on the river”, cruising is also actively
encouraged with weekend cruises to other towns on the East Coast.
For members owning larger boats, the Club
controls a mooring area in West Ferry Bay where boats can lie in relative safety
on single point moorings. Club moorings are available for yachts visiting the
area. As an alternative to mooring at the Club, members can also make use of
the berthing facilities located directly opposite the Club on the South shore of
the river at Tayport harbour where a small marina with berthing pontoons is
located. This facility is easily accessible from the Dundee area and the North
shore of the river by means of the Tay Road Bridge. Applications for a berth
in Tayport Harbour must be made to the Tayport Harbour Trust. The
Club also has an established presence on the West Coast where some members keep larger yachts so as to enjoy the natural beauty and excellent
sailing water afforded by that part of the country.
Training
The RTYC, in cooperation with the
Tay Sail Training Association (TSTA), is also active in
encouraging and delivering training. During the year a full
programme of both "on the water" and shorebased training is carried out.
Further details of all training activities for 2007 /2008 can be found on the
TSTA website at www.taysail.org .
If you would like information on
RTYC training, then please
e-mail training@royaltay.org .
In addition to the formal training provided, members are
always willing to help new and interested individuals to get started in sailing.
For members who do not own their own boat, dinghies can be hired.

The RTYC is an affiliate member club of the Royal Yachting
Association and is recognised by the RYA as a training establishment.
Whatever your training needs, the RTYC can probably provide it!
Cadets
The Club has a very strong youth
section. Boys and girls from the ages of 10 to 18 can become Cadet
members of the Club and have the use, under supervision, of dinghies owned by
the Club and the TSTA.
During any “on the water training”, there are always safety boats in
attendance.

Getting Cadets Afloat During Cadet Week
The Club has in place Policies for Health and Safety and
Child Protection. A Club Official will be more than happy to talk through
the Club Policies with the Parent or Guardian of any young person wishing to
join the Club. Of course any Parent or Guardian would also be most
welcome as a member of the Club. Why let the kids have all the fun!
Social
Unlike many other clubs
associated with sailing in the Dundee area, the RTYC also provides a superb
social venue for members throughout the year. The main Clubhouse
with its magnificent panoramic views over the River Tay is open 7 days a week.
The Clubhouse
facilities include 2 bar areas, a dining room and changing room
facilities. The Club’s caterer provides lunches Tuesday to Sunday
together with high teas on a Sunday. Dinners are served on Friday
and Saturday evenings. The Club’s main lounge has space for 100+ attending dances / social events and about
70+ for special receptions / lunches / dinners. The clubrooms are available for Members to
hire for private functions.
The Club is a great place to meet people. For
the unattached, there is the possibility of meeting up with your partner for life. Its
happened on numerous occasions before!
